Alzheimer's Association Long Island Appoints New President and Slate Of Officers

Ronkonkoma, N.Y. -- Alzheimer's Association Long Island is pleased to announce the appointment of Jules E. Levy, Esq. as their new President and Chairman of the Board. Mr. Levy previously held the position of Treasurer for the Chapter.

Mr. Levy is a partner in the prestigious New York City Law Firm, Hofheimer Gartlir & Gross, LLP. Mr. Levy, who joined the firm in 1964, represents developers, purchasers and sellers of real estate properties, such as office buildings, apartment complexes, shopping centers, and vacant land. An expert in the field of condominium and cooperative law, Mr. Levy wrote some of the first offering plans in the State of New York in the middle to late 1960s. Mr. Levy is a member of The Association of the Bar of the City of New York and New York State Bar Association.

The Alzheimer's Association Long Island has also appointed a new slate of officers for the fiscal year ending 2005. Barbara Gebhardt, President of OPUS Staffing, has been named Vice President; Steven L. Brass, CPA, a partner in Marks Paneth & Shron LLP, has been named Treasurer, and Janet Knipfing, Vice President of Real Estate Lending for Commerce Bank, has been named Secretary.

By the middle of this century, it is estimated that 14 million of today's baby boomers will have Alzheimer's disease. The annual cost of Alzheimer's disease will soar to at least $375 billion, overwhelming our health care system and bankrupting Medicare and Medicaid. Alzheimer's disease does not happen overnight, it begins to attack the brain of its potential victims 10 to 20 years before the first symptoms appear. To protect today's baby boomers from the ravage of Alzheimer's we have to find ways to stop this disease process now, while there is still time to prevent the damage. In addition, we must provide quality care and support for those facing the challenges of Alzheimer's disease.

The Long Island Chapter holds responsibility for providing programs and services for over 55,000 individuals and their caregivers who have been impacted by Alzheimer's disease. The Chapter offers Care & Consultation, Information & Referral, Education, a National Safe Return program, Support Groups, and advocates for the Long Island Alzheimer's Community on all levels of government.

Mr. Levy' goal for his tenure is to raise awareness of Alzheimer's disease and expand the programs and services offered by the Chapter to ensure quality care and support for our Long Island Alzheimer's community.
