Training Curriculum for Professional Healthcare Providers
Alzheimer's Disease Training
For the past two and a half years, alzheimer's association long island
has been working to develop a NYS Certified Training curriculum for professional
healthcare providers. During this timeframe, the NYS Legislature saw
the
need to develop guidelines for Adult Care Facilities and Assisted Living
Residences and passed this legislative initiative in 2004. As a result
of this legislative initiative, a New York State Task Force has been
created
to provide guidance with regard to the new licensing requirements. Our
Executive Director and CEO, Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, has been appointed
to this Task Force and clearly recognizes that staff training is going
to be a large part of the new licensing regulations for Adult Care Facilities
& Assisted Living Facilities.
Alzheimer's association long island, in conjunction with St. Joseph's
College, has now developed an approved training curriculum for professionals
who work directly with those diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The
curriculum
is made up of five components to include: an overview of Alzheimer's
disease, coping with behaviors, improving communication, stress reduction
and available
support services and resources.
This training will be offered as a forty-two contact hour
course and participants will be eligible for three credits towards a
degree
program, should they so desire. Everyone will receive a Certificate of
Completion once all five components have been successfully completed.
This curriculum will be offered at St. Joseph's College, starting with
the Spring Semester, 2006. In addition, AALI will be bringing this course
out to professional healthcare providers beginning the second quarter
of 2006. We will be developing central locations where we can offer
this
curriculum to a broad audience. It is also our intent to seek statewide
approval for this curriculum and then national accreditation within
the
next two years.
